THIRD DAY OF WORKSHOP

Kutiyattam, Sanskrit theatre, which is practised in the province of Kerala, is one of India’s oldest living theatrical traditions. Originating more than 2,000 years ago, Kutiyattam represents a synthesis of Sanskrit classicism and reflects the local traditions of Kerala. In its stylized and codified theatrical language, neta abhinaya (eye expression) and hasta abhinaya (the language of gestures) are prominent. They focus on the thoughts and feelings of the main character. Actors undergo ten to fifteen years of rigorous training to become fully-fledged performers with sophisticated breathing control and subtle muscle shifts of the face and body. The actor’s art lies in elaborating a situation or episode in all its detail. Therefore, a single act may take days to perform and a complete performance may last up to 40 days.

Kutiyattam is traditionally performed in theatres called Kuttampalams, which are located in Hindu temples. Access to performances was originally restricted owing to their sacred nature, but the plays have progressively opened up to larger audiences. Yet the actor’s role retains a sacred dimension, as attested by purification rituals and the placing of an oil lamp on stage during the performance symbolizing a divine presence. The male actors hand down to their trainees detailed performance manuals, which, until recent times, remained the exclusive and secret property of selected families.

With the collapse of patronage along with the feudal order in the nineteenth century, the families who held the secrets to the acting techniques experienced serious difficulties. After a revival in the early twentieth century, Kutiyattam is once again facing a lack of funding, leading to a severe crisis in the profession. In the face of this situation, the different bodies responsible for handing down the tradition have come together to join efforts in order to ensure the continuity of this Sanskrit theatre.

Kapila Venu 

Kapila Venu is a renowned Kutiyattam practitioner and one of the foremost disciples of the legendary Kutiyattam maestro Guru Ammannur Madhava Ckakyar. She has also trained in Kutiyattam with renowned masters such as Guru G Venu, Guru Ammannur Kuttan Chakyar, Guru Usha Nangiar and Guru C N Rama Chakyar and in Mohiniyattam dance under Guru Nirmala Paniker for several years.

Kapila has been performing Kutiyattam and Nangiar Koothu, both as a solo performer and together with the ensembles at Natanakairali and Ammannur Gurukulam all over the world since 1997.

Being a practitioner of an ancient ritual theatre, Kapila firmly believes in continuously evolving technically, spiritually, philosophically and politically. She strives to maintain the technical purity and essence of the art form whilst making space for innovation and creativity.

Kapila has trained and  worked with world renowned farmer and avant-garde dancer Min Tanaka from Japan from  2005 to 2010 and performed in two of his choreographies – ‘Rite of the Forest’ and a solo dance choreography based on Thottangal for Dance Hakushu. This has been one of the most significant influences in her life.

Kapila has collaborated with eminent international artists such as Swedish theatre director Peter Oskarson, American experimental dancer Wally Cardona and Scottish visual and performanceartist Hanna Tuulikki.

She is a visiting faculty at National School of Drama, New Delhi and Intercultural Theatre Institute, Singapore.

The film ‘Kapila’ based on her life and work won the National Award for the Best film on Culture in 2014.

 'एक भारत श्रेष्ठ भारत' के अंतर्गत स्पिक मैके द्वारा आयोजित कार्यशाला

केंद्रीय विद्यालय पूर्वोत्तर रेलवे में स्पिक मैके द्वारा आयोजित 'एक भारत श्रेष्ठ भारत' की श्रंखला में 15 फरवरी 2021 से 17 फरवरी 2021 तक तीन दिवसीय कार्यशाला संपन्न हुई। इस कार्यशाला के अंतर्गत मिस कपिला वेणु ने केरल का शास्त्रीय नृत्य कुटियट्टम के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी दी

कार्यशाला के प्रथम दिन उन्होंने कुटियट्टम नृत्य के इतिहास के बारे में चर्चा करते हुए बताया कि यह 2000 वर्ष पूर्व किया जाने वाला नृत्य है। यह संस्कृत के नाटकों का अभिनय है और यह भारत का सबसे पुराना रंगमंच है। यह मंदिरों में किया जाता है। चाक्यार जाति के पुरुष वा नांबियार समुदाय की महिलाएं इसमें अभिनय करती हैं ।इसमें मिझाव ड्रमों द्वारा ,छोटी घंटियों  द्वारा और इडक्का ( एक सीधे गिलास आकार का ड्रम)  से तथा कुझाल (फूंक कर बजाने वाला एक वाद्य) और शंख से संगीत दिया जाता है।

कुटियट्टम नृत्य में हाव-भाव की भाषा, मंत्रोच्चार, चेहरे और आंखों की अभिव्यक्ति, विस्तृत मुकुट और चेहरे की सज्जा का विशेष महत्व है।

इसके अतिरिक्त प्रथम दिन ही  कपिला वेणु जी द्वारा नृत्य का वीडियो भी दिखाया गया ,जिसमें उनके द्वारा श्री कृष्ण भगवान व  पूतना की कथा का प्रदर्शन किया गया ।

कार्यशाला के दूसरे दिन नृत्य की विभिन्न मुद्राओं की जानकारी दी एवं उनका अभ्यास भी कराया - जैसे कटकम् ,पताकम्, मुष्टि, कर्तरी मुखम् ,शुक्र तुन्डम , अंजलि ,अर्धचंद्र, त्रिपताकम  इत्यादि । इसी श्रंखला में चार प्रकार के अभिनय के बारे में भी जानकारी दी ।

2.आहार्या अभिनय

3.वाचिका अभिनय

4.सात्विका अभिनय

कार्यशाला के तीसरे दिन की शुरुआत मंत्रोच्चारण से हुई-

इसके अतिरिक्त नौ रस के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी देते हुए उसे अभिनय के द्वारा भी दिखाया ।रामायण की कथा के एक छोटे से हिस्से को हस्त अभिनय व रसों के द्वारा अपने वीडियो के माध्यम से प्रदर्शित किया ।

इस तरह तीन दिवसीय यह कार्यशाला प्राचार्या महोदया श्रीमती अपर्णा सक्सेना के कुशल निर्देशन में विद्यालय के विद्यार्थियों के लिए बहुत ही रोचक व लाभदायक रही ।इस कार्यशाला को सफल बनाने में श्रीमती मीता गुप्ता ,श्री विजेंद्र कुमार व्यास ,श्रीमती रेणु सक्सेना, श्रीमती पूनम शुक्ला ,श्रीमती मंजू गौतम एवं श्रीमती सुषमा यादव का भी योगदान रहा ।
